Kate Davies's Book Selection for October 2024
We can take it as read that all the books featured this year are interesting, absorbing and worthy of our attention. What we also know is that all the authors appearing will add greatly to our enjoyment, with their additional stories and insights.
To get us in the mood, many of us went to the BOOKMARK-hosted talk by Alexander McCall Smith in Perth at the end of September. What a delight to spend an hour in his imagination. The story behind My Italian Bulldozer was hilarious. I have previously reviewed many of the books featured at this year’s festival and one I’m looking forward to hearing more about is Sally Magnusson’s Music in the Dark.I can’t wait to hear more on Sunday 6th.
Looking beyond the Festival, the gift-giving season is nearly upon us, and these next few books could be just the ticket. First up is Stephen Fry’s Odyssey; William Boyd, whom I have a soft spot for, and his latest book is already on my reading pile: Gabriel’s Moon.As with every other novel by Boyd, I expect great characters and a well-told tale. Back to 2024, where we’ve been getting glimpses of what life is like orbiting the earth as news coverage continues of a 10-day mission that turned into an 8-month voyage - short-listed for this year’s Booker Prize is Orbital by Samantha Harvey.
More for the gifting season next month (and of course self-gifting is much encouraged). In the meantime, enjoy the Festival!
