The importance of textiles – wool, cloth, and their uses from clothing to propaganda – is the theme of this fascinating event.  Both of these writers also practise what they write about, as sewers and knitters.  Esther’s book The Golden Fleece explores the history of the importance of wool throughout the British Isles: wool’s influence on our landscape, language and culture.  She also crafts culturally significant objects to remind us of wool’s value and our historic relationship with it.  Claire’s book, subtitled A History of the World through the Eye of a Needle, takes us from medieval France to contemporary Mexico, with so many interesting tales to tell of how the language of sewing also becomes the language of protest, or memory, or identity to make voices heard.  Chaired by one of our Patrons, Fiona Armstrong, this lively event raised many interesting questions
